Ivermectin Liquid for Horses
IVERMECTIN (ivermectin) LIQUID for Horses has been formulated for administration by oral drench. One low-volume dose is effective against important internal parasites, including the arterial stages of Strongylus vulgaris, and bots. Its convenience, broad-spectrum efficacy and wide safety margin make IVERMECTIN Liquid for horses an ideal product for parasite control of horses.
IVERMECTIN LIQUID for horses is a clear, ready-to-use solution. Each mL contains 10 mg of ivermectin. It is formulated to deliver the recommended dose level of 200 µg of ivermectin per kilogram of body weight. Each mL contains sufficient ivermectin to treat 50 kg of body weight; 10 mL will treat a 500 kg horse.
Therapeutic Classification
Ivermectin is derived from the avermectins, a family of highly active, broad-spectrum antiparasitic agents which are isolated from the fermentation of Streptomyces avermitilis.
Ivermectin Liquid for Horses Indications
For the effective treatment of parasitic infections due to:
Large strongyles: Strongylus vulgaris, (adults and arterial larval stages), S. edentatus (adults) and S. equinus (adults)
Small strongyles, including those resistant to some benzimidazole class compounds (adults and fourth-stage larvae): Cyathostomum spp., Cylicocyclus spp., Cylicostephanus spp., Cylicodontophorus spp., Gyalocephalus spp., Triodontophorus spp. (adults)
Intestinal threadworms (adults): Strongyloides westeri
Pinworms (adult and fourth stage larvae): Oxyuris equi
Ascarids (adult and third and fourth stage larvae): Parascaris equorum
Hairworms (adult): Trichostrongylus axei
Large-mouthed stomach worms (adult): Habronema muscae
Neck threadworms (microfilariae): Onchocerca spp.
Bots (oral and gastric stages): Gasterophilus intestinalis, G. nasalis
IVERMECTIN LIQUID for horses may aid in the clinical improvement of dermatoses caused by cutaneous larvae of Habronema spp., Draschia spp. and microfilariae of Onchocerca spp.
Ivermectin Liquid for Horses Dosage And Administration
IVERMECTIN LIQUID for horses is formulated for administration by stomach tube (nasogastric intubation) or as an oral drench. The recommended dose is 200 µg of ivermectin per kilogram of body weight. Each mL contains sufficient ivermectin to treat 50 kg of body weight; 10 mL will treat a 500 kg horse.
Multiple dose bottle: 15 mL syringe Use a calibrated dosing syringe inserted into the bottle to measure the appropriate dose. Use a clean syringe when accessing the bottle to avoid contaminating the remaining product.
Single dose syringe: Each marking on the syringe plunger will deliver sufficient liquid to treat 50 kg of body weight. Turn the knurled ring up the plunger shaft so that the side nearest the barrel is at the prescribed weight marking. Remove the plastic cap from the tip of the nozzle.
Administration: Clear the horse’s mouth of any food material, elevate the horse’s head, and using a syringe, deposit the appropriate dose in the back of the mouth. In order to avoid unnecessary coughing or the potential for material to enter the trachea and lungs, do not use excessive pressure (squirting), do not use a large (diluted) dose volume, and do not deposit the dose in the laryngeal area. Increased dose rejection may occur if the dose is deposited in the buccal space. Keep the horse’s head elevated and observe the horse to ensure the dose is retained.
Suggested Parasite Control Program
All horses should be included in a regular parasite control program with particular attention being paid to mares, foals, and yearlings. Foals should be treated initially at 6 to 8 weeks of age. The program should be designed to accommodate the needs of horses and their specific husbandry and conditions. IVERMECTIN LIQUID for horses is highly effective against gastrointestinal nematodes and bots in horses. Regular treatments will reduce the chances of verminous arteritis and colic caused by S. vulgaris. If there is a high risk of re-infection with P. equorum, foals should be re-treated at 6-8 week intervals. With its broad spectrum, IVERMECTIN LIQUID for horses is well suited to be the major component in a parasite control program. Consult your veterinarian for parasite control programs to meet your specific needs.
CAUTIONS
- IVERMECTIN LIQUID for horses has been formulated specifically for use in horses only. The product should not be used in other animal species as severe adverse reactions, including fatalities in dogs, may result.
- Some horses have experienced reactions with swelling and itching shortly after treatment. In most such cases, the horses have been diagnosed as carrying heavy infections of Onchocerca microfilariae, and it is assumed that the reactions were the result of microfilariae dying in large numbers. Although the signs have resolved spontaneously in a few days, symptomatic treatment may be advisable. Consult your veterinarian should these symptoms persist.
Warnings
Treated horses must not be slaughtered for use in food for at least 14 days after the latest treatment with this drug. Avoid smoking and eating while handling. Protect eyes from direct contact with the product and wash hands after used. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
Mode Of Action
Ivermectin is a member of the macrocyclic lactone class of endectocides which have a unique mode of action. Compounds of the class bind selectively and with high affinity to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels which occur in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells. This leads to an increase in the permeability of the cell membrane to chloride ions with hyperpolarization of the nerve or muscle cell, resulting in paralysis and death of the parasite. Compounds of this class may also interact with other ligand-gated chloride channels, such as those gated by the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
The margin of safety for compounds of this class is attributable to the fact that mammals do not have glutamate-gated chloride channels, the macrocyclic lactones have a low affinity for other mammalian ligand-gated chloride channels and they do not readily cross the blood-brain barrier.
Safety In Horses
IVERMECTIN LIQUID for horses may be used in horses of all ages including mares at any stage of pregnancy. Stallions may be treated without adversely affecting fertility. These horses have been treated with no adverse effects other than those noted under Cautions.
Environmental Safety
Studies indicate that when ivermectin comes in contact with the soil, it readily and tightly binds to the soil and becomes inactive over time. Drug containers and any residual contents should be disposed of safely (e.g. by burying or incinerating) as free ivermectin may adversely affect fish and certain water-borne organisms.
Storage
Store tightly closed at 15-30°C. Protect from light.
